The door closer is the metal arm at the top of your door. When it goes bad, your door may not lock. Here are 5 signs to watch for.
1. The door slams
A slam can hurt fingers and crack glass. The closer’s speed is set wrong, or the closer is worn out.
2. The door stops before it latches
This is the big one. If the door doesn’t latch, it isn’t locked. Your business is open to anyone.
3. You see oil
Oil on the arm or the floor means the seals inside are gone. A leaking closer can’t be fixed. It needs to be replaced.
4. The door is hard to open
If people have to pull hard, the closer is set too strong. That can be a problem for older people and wheelchairs.
5. The arm is loose or bent
Loose screws and bent arms get worse fast. Fix them before the closer falls off.
Fix or replace?
If there’s no oil, an adjustment may be all it needs. If it leaks, replace it. Most closer jobs take one short visit.
