Some managers carry a ring with 20 or 30 keys. They spend time hunting for the right one. And they are never sure who else has a copy.
A master key system fixes that. Here is how it works, in plain words.
What is a master key system?
It is a way to set up your locks so that one lock can open with two keys.
- The door's own key. This is the worker's key. It opens only that door, or only that area.
- The master key. This is the manager's key. It opens every door in the system.
So a cashier carries one key. The manager carries one key too. Nobody needs a big ring.
How does it work inside the lock?
Inside a normal lock there are small pins. The right key lifts them to just the right height, and the lock turns.
In a master keyed lock, a locksmith adds tiny extra pins. That makes two "right heights" instead of one. One height fits the door key. The other fits the master key.
That is why a master key system needs a plan. Each lock has to be set up the right way, or keys open doors they shouldn't.
Levels: who opens what
A system can be simple or have a few levels. For example:
- Change key: opens one door, like one office.
- Area master: opens a group of doors, like all of the second floor.
- Grand master: opens everything.
Most small businesses only need one or two levels. Bigger buildings, schools and property managers often need more.
Signs your business needs one
- Managers carry too many keys.
- You can't say for sure who has a key to what.
- Different staff need to get into different rooms.
- You have more than one building, suite or store.
- You plan to add doors later.
If two or more of these sound like you, a master key system will likely save you time and worry.
When you might not need one
A small shop with one front door and one back door may not need it. One key for each person can be enough. If you are not sure, ask. We'll tell you straight.
The big risk: copied keys
A master key opens everything. So if someone copies it, every door is at risk.
The fix: use restricted keys. They can only be cut by an approved locksmith, and only with your OK. A hardware store can't copy them.
Keep a key log
A master key system works best when you write down who has which key. When someone leaves, you know what to collect. If a key is lost, you know which locks to rekey.
What we do
We walk your building and talk about who needs to open what. Then we make a written key plan, set up the locks, and cut and stamp the keys. We leave room so you can add doors later. You get the price before we start.
If you want to go keyless on some doors, access control can work alongside your keys.
Next step
Tell us about your building (how many doors, and who needs to get in where). Or call (682) 324-6688, Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 6 PM.
Quick answers
What is a master key system?
It is a way to set up your locks so each lock opens with two keys: its own key and a master key. Workers carry a key for their area, and the manager carries one key that opens every door.
Can people copy a master key?
A normal key can be copied at most hardware stores. Restricted keys can only be cut by an approved locksmith with the owner's OK, which is why we suggest them for master key systems.
Can I add doors to my master key system later?
Yes, if the system is planned with room to grow. We build the key plan so new doors can be added later.
